About Us
Since Febrery 2, 1959, PRATES y Cia SCA Construction Company had continued as an entrerprise, with the original activity of Juan Maria Prates Roads Company, registered in the Register of Contractors of the City of La Plata from May 28, 1929 .
Since it beginning, the main value of the company was to maintain the entrepreneurial foundational concept, with the philosophical pillars of seriousness, responsibility and work culture.
Our best reference are the 90 years working for clients as hard as the national, provincial and municipal levels, having successfully made over 300 public projects in these 90 years.
The company remains as a familiar SME company, being managed today by the second and third generation. We are still a SME because it is our philosophy. It is the way we understand it should be. This company scale allows us to maintain a personal relationship that ensures respect and fidelity to our history, allowing us to be efficient and flexible enough to both our customers and the micro and macroeconomic scenarios. It is the way we could sail over 90 years through real storms in our country. It is our philosophy and our pride, knowing that our name is synonymous of respect to the signed contracts and to the given word.
We have built, on this long and continuous journey, many projects, bridges, civil projects, hydraulic, and waterworks and roads. Thousands of workers and dozens of professionals had proudly worked with us.. We have observed all agreements made in this 90 years. We have never had a complaint form any customer, and we are proud to follow the same concept of life.
It is the oldest company registered in the Register of Contactors of Public Works of the Province of Buenos Aires, with registration number #69.
In December 2015, due to update reasons, we did an increase on shareholder equity and a transformation of the corporate type, from Prates y Cia SCA to PRATES Y CIA SA
HISTORY
Giovanni María Prates, was born in December 4, 1899 in Cordenons, Pordenone, Friuli, Italy.
From an early age, between 10 and 12 years old, he began working as an assistant of a mason friend of his father, Luigi Prates. Since at that time, to get a job it was required previously to work as an apprentice, he had to work some years without pay.
In 1914 beguns the 1st World War, with great suffering for the civilian population, and Giovanni Prates despite being only 15 years old, is enrolled into the mountain infantry of the Italian Army.
In 1918, after the war, the economic situation of Europens was difficult and they all wanted to emigrate to the “America” to help his family from abroad. Many of them went to the U.S., Canada and Argentina. Giovanni, in 1922 is shipped to Buenos Aires, and like all who came to this land alone, he was housed in the Immigrants Hotel, located in the port of Buenos Aires. There, according to oublic registers, they had tried to find him a job. After 5 days from his arrival, he began working on the construction of the Palacio de Comunicaciones, on the Avenida Leandro N. Alem de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires which was just starting to be built. He started as a bricklayer assistant. The first Friday he got his first salary, and was promoted to First Oficial. After 30 days he was finnaly promoted to Principal Foreman. Periodically he sent half of his earning to his parents as with the other half it was enough to pay all his expenses. He worked in that building for two years and then, with the same company, he worked on the construction of other buildings in the Port and the City of Buenos Aires until 1928.
In Buenos Aires he learned to work with reinforced concrete. In 1927 the company came to La Plata to built a building in the corner of 7 th Ave. and. 51 St., one of the first buildings in La Plata built with a reinforced concrete structure.
He moved to La Plata, where he begun his own business, working alone or in partnership with his friend and fellow Primo Polo, in the construction of buildings. Both Giovanni and Primo became the first “rainforced concret” contractors in this City.
On May 28, 1929 he obtained the File # 269 in the Municipality of La Plata Contractors Register.
He signs in the Register of Contractors of the Department of Public Works of the Province of Buenos Aires as a sole proprietorship under the name Juan M. Prates Roads Company (File # 69).and in the Register of Nation Contarctors (File # 138).
He begun to work for the Department of Roads, building a wood and iron bridge (still existing now) on General Belgrano Road, nearby the Governor’s House.
He specializes in rainforced concret bridges.
In 1959, his son Luis Raúl Prates begins his first steps under his tutelage and experience, working in partnership with his father under the brand new Prates y Cia SCA Construction Company.
The company quickly built a reputation for integrity, teamwork and commitment.
These values remain true today and are the reason we were able to celebrate our 90th anniversary. This is a milestone which all of us at Prates y Cia are very proud.
